How to care for animals during the COVID-19 pandemic?
On March 11, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. While the virus is spreading further, the main question of animal carriers is: “Can I get COVID-19 from my dog / cat?”
So far, the answer is NO. While companion animals may be infected with COVID-19, there is currently no evidence that these animals transmit the virus to humans.
To help you care for animals during this pandemic, we’ve created a list of tips to follow for maximum care for you and your pet.
CAN I WALK THE DOG?
Dogs need their daily walks. Physical and mental exercises are important for both humans and animals. While there is no prohibition on moving, dog owners should walk dogs as usual, but with increased caution practicing social distance with other people while walking the dog by visiting areas not frequented by humans.
Pet owners should wash their hands for at least 20 seconds before and after each walk, and if possible, carry a small disinfectant with them during the walk.
DO I NEED TO WASH MY DOG/CAT MORE FREQUENTLY?
Concerning COVID-19, there are no special measures to be taken in relation to companion animals.
After each walk, it is preferable for the dog’s paws to be cleaned with lukewarm water or with antibacterial wipes.
If you suspect that the animal has been exposed to a person infected with COVID-19, routine washing of the animal will remove any concerns you may have regarding the transmission of the virus.
It is highly advisable to clean the collar and the leash that you used for walking the dog.
You must always remove feces from the ground so that the environment is always clean.
Also, disinfectant products need not be used in pets. In fact, high-alcohol products should not be used in pets! Instead, a regular wash with pet shampoo is enough.
CAN I PLAY WITH THE DOG?
For animal owners with homes with access to backyard, play with animals is encouraged. But, again, hygiene is very important. Wash your hands before and after any interaction with animals, and clean your dog/cat paws before allowing them back inside.
